Are you wanting to try animation with your students? Not sure where to start, or feeling overwhelmed?

In this session, I will be sharing four easy to implement animation lessons. All of these lessons your students can do with just a chromebook.

You will leave with inexpensive and practical ideas on how to implement animation in your STEM classroom while also targeting your science, math, technology, and language arts standards.

About:

Carrie works as a K-6 STEM specialist in an urban school district in Toledo, Ohio. She has a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and has always loved creating engaging lessons for students.

After 20 years in general education, she switched to STEM specialist when her school district implemented a new STEM program for elementary grades. As a former primary teacher, she loves STEM lessons that incorporate her favorite picture books.

Carrie is passionate about growth mindset and helping students to welcome failures as learning opportunities. Her favorite quote to share with students:  “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” ― Thomas A. Edison.

Session Summary:

In this session, you'll find several projects to utilize with or without a Makey Makey. You will walk away with lesson ideas to teach students about circuits with cost effective supplies.

You can expose your students to different types of switches using recyclables, household items, and teacher supplies.

Lastly we can take Makey Makey to the next level by making things like a steering wheel controller.

About:

Alma Torrez is a K-5 STEM teacher in Texas. She currently is the only STEM teacher at an elementary level in her district. Her students have worked on coding all sorts of robots and do a lot of engineering with recycled materials.

Alma is always eager to bring in new ideas to her classroom and find what works for her students. She also schedules and assists in their school garden where they successfully have grown lots of onions, peppers, and more.

Many of Alma's students come from low-income families, so she is passionate to educate them about careers in STEM while creating memorable lessons. She is no celebrity but her students sure do make her feel like she is when she walks the halls.

Session Summary:

This session is designed to get even the most technophobic teachers started with stop motion animation. Amy and Stacey will include tips and tricks for getting started as well as tips for students to make more professional looking videos.

They will outline a sample progression order for teaching skills. Student examples will be shared.

About:

Amy Parks

Amy is an Engineering is Elementary (EiE) and National Geographic Certified Educator with 23 years of classroom experience.  She has taught both Science and Social Studies, grades 4-8 in public and private schools in New York State.

She is currently teaching a K - 5 STEAM program, called Innovation Lab at Forts Ferry Elementary School, in the  North Colonie School District.

Stacey Shepard

Stacey is a National Board Certified Teacher with 25 years experience. She has taught grades 4 - 6 as a classroom teacher in both North Carolina and in New York. Stacey  is currently teaching a K - 5 STEAM program, called Innovation Lab at Boght Hills Elementary School, in the  North Colonie School District.

Partners in crime, Amy and Stacey have spent the past 15 years collaborating to design and implement their district's Gifted Learning Enrichment Program. 

In the last 3 years they have joined a larger team of Innovation Lab teachers to develop and implement the K-5 STEAM curriculum in the recently opened Innovation Labs across all 6 elementary schools in the district.

About:

Tiffany Pace is a STEAM Specialist at Cross Lanes Elementary in Charleston, West Virginia where she teaches students in kindergarten through 5th-grade. She is the WV 2020 Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching for Elementary (PAEMST), a Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms alumni, an Amazon Future Engineer Teacher Ambassador, a National Geographic Certified Teacher, and the 2023 West Virginia Elementary Environmental Teacher of the Year.

Tiffany is an author, reviewer, and an Advisory Board member for the National Science Teaching Association’s Science & Children journal as well as a presenter and reviewer for their national conferences. She has presented nationally for Carly and Adam’s Day of Play and Art of STEAM virtual conferences.

Tiffany is an Executive Board liaison for the West Virginia Science Teachers Association as the Elementary Science Ambassador Representative and is a presenter at their yearly conferences. For her district, she is a member of the Global Diversity Collaborative and a virtual curriculum designer.

Tiffany enjoys spending time with her family, traveling and exploring new places, and being captured by a great book that she can’t put down.

Session Summary:

Neon Art Supplies and Black Lights provide an opportunity for the students to see art in a new light (pun intended!).

We will talk about the difference between glow in the dark (phosphorus)/UV reactive/Bioluminescent and discuss many different neon art supplies, materials for UV light stations and black lights that work best for the classroom.

Space, Ocean and Rainforest are just some of the themes that can be tied to neon/black light art projects, and they make fantastic immersive art installations.

About:

Alisa is an Art and STEAM teacher at an elementary school in California Bay Area with 680 students ranging TK-5th grade.

She is a textile artist, has an Endeavor STEM Teacher Certification through collaboration with NASA and is really passionate about the integration of Art and STEM.

She lives in Walnut Creek, CA with her husband, three children, two dogs and soon a bearded dragon. Alisa is bilingual in English and Russian and is conversational in Mandarin Chinese.

STEM education is exciting and engaging for all- especially for our SPED population!!! New this year, our school invested in 2 adaptive STEM classes (elementary group and a middle/high school combo group)!

The goal of this presentation is to provide a creative, intentional avenue for all schools to incorporate STEM opportunities for our SPED students.

About:

I thrive on creating meaningful, 21st century, engaging and rigorous lessons. My background in Gifted Education has influenced many best practices in my creation and delivery of PBL and Inquiry Lessons, mostly rooted in STEM. Offering *student choice* via menus and free flowing stations are just two of the effective strategies used in my STEM classroom. Promoting critical thinking, creativity, and a genuine love of learning are always top priorities.

I enjoy spending time sharing and developing STEM/PBL/INQUIRY lessons with colleagues, families, and future educators. One of my personal goals is to start sharing more via insta, facebook, TPT, and blogs.

In my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with my family (Rob- husband, Lilly 23 years old, Stella 21 years old, Charlie 18 years old,  and Louie 10 years old). We also have a sweet dog named Mable.

Connie Ann Roussel is a mom to four daughters and wife to a retired soldier. She taught in New York and Germany before we settled in Texas. She had 10 years of experience as a classroom teacher prior to switching to STEM. She currently runs the STEM program for our K-5 students.
